The Wildcats’ baseball team, ranked #13 in the state in Class 5A, jumped out to a 4-0 lead at Marshall Friday afternoon only to see the Mavericks rally and take a 5-4 win. The Wildcats slip to 8-1 in district play and into a first place tie in the loss column with Hallsville. The Wildcats are now 14-6-1 for the season.
The loss ended a ten game winning streak for the Wildcats. The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the first and added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead. Marshall finally got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Mavericks cut the lead to 4-2 after five innings. The sixth did the Wildcats in as the Mavericks scored three times to take the lead. When the Wildcats did not score in the seventh, Marshall had the win. Marshall outhit the Wildcats nine to four.
For the Wildcats, Heston Golightly drove home two runs and Michael Arnold and Ryan Humphries had one RBI apiece. Humphries pitched the first five and a third innings for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats have a bye next Tuesday. Their next game will be at Mt. Pleasant next Friday.
