Higgins Memorial Highway Sign in Place

Higgins signFriday morning at the Texas Highway Department Office on Hillcrest Drive in Sulphur Springs, the sign that will be placed on State Highway 154 between Yantis and Sulphur Springs designating it as the Sgt. Tanner Stone Higgins Highway was unveiled before a good crowd. Sgt. Higgins was killed while serving in the military. His cousin, Ryan Horn, a Sulphur Springs native, presided Friday morning.

Horn expressed the family’s gratitude to the Texas Department of Transportation and to the Class of 2007 for their efforts in attaining the designation. The effort began in May of this year. Horn read from the resolution a portion that he said speaks volumes, “In honor of his service and sacrifice, a portion of Texas State Highway 154 between the communities of Yantis and Sulphur Springs has been named the Sgt Tanner Stone Higgins Memorial Highway. Now therefore be it…” He said he believed that “…if one person sees your name, speaks your name, or reads your name, you do not truly die.”
