Violet Elizabeth Blalock

Violet Elizabeth Blalock, 90, passed away Sunday, November 30, at Carriage House Manor. A graveside service for Mrs. Blalock will be held at Myrtle Spring Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2014. No formal visitation will be held. Viewing may be done during business hours at West Oaks Funeral Home.

Violet Elizabeth Goldsmith was born October 9, 1924 in Quitman, Texas to William Arthur and Lydia Ann Goldsmith. She married W.R. Blalock in Quitman, Texas on June 23, 1951. They had one son, William Richard “Rick” Blalock, Jr. Mrs. Blalock grew up in Wood County and upon graduating from high school attended and graduated from Dallas Methodist Hospital School of Nursing on April 16, 1944. In September of 1944 she entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She served in the Asiatic Pacific campaign of World War II achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After separating from the Army, she worked as the county nurse in Wood County. She later began working at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital where she served as Director of Nursing, Director of the LVN school, and Director of In-service until her retirement. During her long career in nursing Mrs. Blalock was one of the most respected nurses in her field. She was loved by the doctors, coworkers, students, patients, and friends. She could handle any situation and if you needed something done you went to Mr. Blalock to get it done.

Mrs. Blalock was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bill James Goldsmith, and her son, Rick Blalock. She is survived by many friends and former co-workers. Her life was one of service to others and she will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to The Gideon’s International at www.gideons.org.
