Miller Grove News by Brandon Darrow 10/07/14
Fall is here and the days are getting seemingly shorter. Before we know it, it will be time to roll those clocks back one hour as daylight savings time ends. Another thought that enters my mind when I think of autumn is the school’s annual Fall Carnival. This year it is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24.
Saturday was Farmers Electric Cooperative’s annual business meeting. This year the meeting was held in Rockwall. I think there were approximately 450 members that attended. I was glad to see several faces that I knew there. I feel like 20 would be a good estimate of the folks from the Miller Grove area that attended. I won’t name each of them because I know I will leave someone out but one of our own neighbors won the grand prize – a truck. Joyce Pippin was the lucky grand prize winner. She and Linell Woods made the trek to Rockwall together that day. I also remember Elaine Garmon’s name being called as winning a prize that day.
Congratulations to Paul and Kayla (Petty) Berkvens who just had their second little girl. Rylie Page Berkvens was born Sept. 19, 2014 in Spokane, Washington. Her birth weight was 7 lbs, 15 oz, and she was 20 ¾ inches long. Her big nearly-two-year-old sister is Reagan Berkvens. Maternal grandparents are Kay (Miller) Blanton and Varrell Petty. Her uncle is Nathan Petty. Kayla was a 2003 graduate of Miller Grove High School.
Another baby that was born this last week with a Miller Grove connection is Hadley Mae Minter. She was born Sept. 24 to Zac and Jalayne (Boggs) Minter. She weighed 7 lbs, 13 oz, and was 20.5 inches long. Her maternal grandparents are Eddy and Robin Kerby of Miller Grove. Jalayne was also a graduate of MGHS. She was two grades ahead of me, graduating in 1999.
I heard that this week my cousin, Clint Stuckey, who is in the Army received a promotion. He is now an E3 and made Full Honors Firing Party. Some of you may not recognize his name but his grandfather is my uncle Ronny Darrow and his grandmother is Claudia (McCutchen) Jones. Clint’s great-grandmother is Gay Nell (Luther) Walls of Miller Grove.
Happy Birthday this week to Doug Hall on Oct. 5, Charlotte Burns & Maddox Potts on Oct. 6, Pauline Rubarts on Oct. 7, Blake Smith & my aunt Kathy Darrow on Oct. 8, Justin Darrow & Heather McCraw on Oct. 9, and Baden Shackelford on Oct. 11.
