With lots on his highway improvement wants list, Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap is watching with interest as the Texas State Legislature considers how TXDOT will be run in the future. The issue is expected to come up during the next legislative session. The Sunset Commission recently released a report on TXDOT’s management, which is currently run by commissioners appointed by the Governor. Judge Millsap intends to contact State Senator Bob Deuell and State Representative Mark Homer to discuss the matter. Judge Millsap says our area has interests in Interstate 30 and projects like the State Highway 11 Extension Project current under construction and the much-needed proposal to widen State Highway 154 south to the Wood County line.

Sometimes bills from the Texas Legislature have unintended consequences. That appears to be the case after a bill was passed during the legislative session that attempted to control what files computer technicians could look at when working on a computer. However the bill went further and required that computer technicians become private investigators to check out computer files. Local computer technician Caz Kivell told KSST’s Bill Bradford that the bill would require him to work under an investigator for three year to become licensed. Kivell said, if enforced, no one would be able to repair a computer for the next three years except investigators. The legislature is expected to address this problem when they meet again.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has sent out a news release saying they want drivers and passengers to have a safe July 4 Holiday weekend. The DPS says they have increased patrols to reduce traffic fatalities and crashes. Troopers will be looking for those who are driving drunk, speeding or not wearing safety belts. The director of the DPS Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr. says if the thought of killing or injuring others on the road while you’re driving drunk is not enough to make you drive sober, he says just remember our troopers will be looking to arrest you. Col. Davis adds many drunk drivers think that they are sober enough to drive and discover that they are wrong when they’re arrested and taken to jail.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has a message for you. They are urging boaters to take extra care as thousands will be taking to the state’s lakes and bays over the busy 4th of July weekend. Maj. Alfonso Campos, chief of marine safety enforcement for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says he typically sees more accidents on the big three summer holidays: Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day weekends. He says there are more people on the water and there is usually a party atmosphere. As of July 3, there had been 95 boating accidents, 51 serious injuries and 23 fatalities on Texas waters so far this year. TPWD spokesman Aaron Reed encourages people to designate a driver for both the boat and the drive home. Second, he says wear a lifejacket. Game wardens will be out in force on state waters over the holiday weekend.
