Hopkins County Residents Warned of Paving Scam

Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum is warning county residents about a man who is working a paving scheme targeting mostly the elderly. Tatum says the man promises to do an inexpensive paving job using materials left over from a previous job. Then he presents homeowners with a very large bill and strongly demands payment. One county resident has already been scammed. Tatum says the man is a while male in a white hummer. Tatum says if you see this man, call 9-1-1.

Director of Senior Center Warns Citizens of Scam

Karon Weatherman, Program and Marketing Director with the Sulphur Springs Senior Center, is receiving calls about an apparent scam targeting senior citizens. A woman is telling people she can put them on a free meal program. She wants to meet in their home to sign them up. The caller claims to work for NETO in Mineola. Ms. Weatherman says neither of the county’s meals programs use phone calls to sign people up. There is also no NETO office in Mineola. Ms. Weatherman advises people not to give out any personal information over the phone or agree to an appointment in the home.

AD Greg Owens Warns Local Merchants About Some People Misrepresenting Themselves

Buyer beware! Sulphur Springs Athletic Director Greg Owens is warning area merchants about people selling ads on things like posters and T-shirts alleging they are benefiting high school athletics. Some even represent themselves as coaches. Owens says if you don’t know whom you are dealing with; call the high school to check the deal out. Owens says some businesses have received nothing for their money.

At 3 a.m. Friday morning, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Evans and deputy Dennis Findley arrested a 62-year old Point man, James Edward Pruett for two warrants in connection with a recent fraud case where a Hopkins man lost $71,000. The alleged scam involved driveway improvements and lightning rods. Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum says the suspect was not working alone and may have been part of an organized group. Tatum says the FBI is interested in assisting him in his investigation. Tatum feels there may be other cases of similar fraud that may have occurred in the county. He encourages anyone victimized to come forward so the sheriff’s department can look into it.

Arrest Warrants Issued in Hopkins Co. Fraud Case

Arrest warrants have been issued for a Point man in connection with a fraud case where an elderly Hopkins County man lost $71,000. Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigator Lewis Tatum said the warrants were for impersonating a public servant and for securing the execution of a document by deception. Tatum said the suspect told the victim he was from the Environmental Protection Agency. He reportedly told the victim his driveway contained chemicals harmful to the environment. The suspect offered to fix the problem. The fraud began in March and was discovered last week. Tatum said the suspect was discovered after he cashed some of the victim’s checks.

Hopkins County Man Victim of $71,000 Fraud Case

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a large fraud case. The Sheriff’s Department was told over the weekend that a person had swindled approximately $71,000 from an elderly Hopkins County man recently. The fraud reportedly began in early March and went on until it was discovered last Friday. Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigators are looking into the case.
