Wildcats Defensive Coordinator Matt Young says he was happy with the defense in the Paris win but not satisfied. Singled out for praise were lineman Jameison Dial, linebacker Tyler Higginbotham and cornerback Anthony Mills. The defense allowed Paris only 209 yards but Coach Young says remove two big plays and the yardage goes down to 120. Young says Whitehouse and quarterback Brady Attaway will present a big challenge for his defense.

Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens said he believes the Wildcats played everyone on their roster on a very humid night Friday as the Wildcats topped Paris 48-20 at Prim Stadium. Coach Owens noted he has a roster where everyone can contribute and that’s what they did Friday. Some players played on offense and defense and there were heavy rotations on both lines. Seven players got in at defensive tackle and 4 or 5 defensive ends played. Eight players caught passes.

The Wildcats offensive coaches are wearing Whitehouse t-shirts at practice this week to remind players who ended the Wildcats’ season last year. The Wildcats probably wont need any additional motivation to get ready for Whitehouse. Even the 7 on 7 team this summer couldn’t wait to face and beat Whitehouse at the state tournament. Monday’s first practice of the week was great according to Offensive Coordinator Jeff Riordan. Riordan calls the offense’s first game pretty good. He notes the Wildcats racked up 515 yards, scored on their first possession of each half and had ten plays of over 20 yards. Riordan is also excited about the added dimension of running back Ryan Young who gained 158 yards. Riordan says it will make him a better coordinator.

Wildcats Coach Greg Owens says there are some advantages to opening the season on the road. As the home team Friday against Paris, Owens has distractions swirling around him. Game prep time is taken up with making sure the field gets striped. Owens is ready for a game that counts. He says practices have been good this week. He says since this is a non-district game, he will use a lot of players especially in both lines and receivers to keep everyone fresh. Owens is hoping for a strong start from his team.

Lady Cats Volleyball Coach Rachel Curtis says her team seemed to lose some confidence in the fourth game against North Lamar with the Lady Cats leading 2-1. North Lamar rallied to win 3-2. Still Coach Curtis says her team’s confidence level is much higher this year than it ever was last year. She complimented her team for making several hustle plays. Paris Football Coach Travis Smith had his hands full last year as he tried to instill discipline to his team. Thirteen players were dismissed last football season and another 29 during the off-season. Smith likes the 35 he has left on this year’s team. Smith learned discipline from his high school coach, legendary McKinney coach Ron Poe whose brother Don coached in Sulphur Springs. Smith will bring his disciplined survivors to Gerald Prim Stadium to play the Wildcats Friday night.
