An always-popular happening during Fall Festival is the Arts and Crafts Show. It is scheduled this year on Friday and Saturday, September 19-20. Chairperson Johanna Hicks says spaces for vendors are filling up quickly but she adds there are still a few left. The vendors will be located inside and outside of Sulphur Springs High School. The event is not for commercial vendors. Ms. Hicks says expect to see things like homemade candles, soaps, home décor, ironwork and jewelry.

Creative Hopkins County residents are encouraged to enter Fall Festival’s Household Arts Contest. Chairperson Johanna Hicks says there are categories for all ages: children up to 10, children 11-18, adults 19-69 and adults 70 and up. There is also a nursing home category. People can show off gardening, canning, sewing, handcrafts, painting, clothing, cake decoration, creative crafts, art, scrapbooks, photography, quilts, dolls, horticulture, woodworking and more. Items can be turned in at the Extension Service office through September 17 or at the high school conference center for official registration on September 18-19. The entries will be on display the afternoon of the 19th and on the 20th after judging.

lions-christmas-parade
Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell says excitement is building for the nighttime Lions’ Club Christmas Parade. He says several banks have registered to have floats as have Wal-Mart and Tractor Supply. More than $10,000 in prize money will be offered in commercial, non-profit and marching band categories. Parade registration forms are available at local banks or from any chamber of commerce ambassador.

Wildcats Marching Band Director Charles McCauley, in his 12th year, calls this year’s summer band practice the best we’ve had. McCauley commented after Thursday night’s Squad Off competition for parents. The saxophones won the competition, which featured the first song of this year’s halftime routine, Lady Madonna. McCauley was pleased with the large turnout of band parents for the Squad Off held at the end of preschool practices.

Blue Blazes Drill Team Director Christie McCullough announced at Show Off Thursday evening that for the first time, the Blue Blazes would compete in the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders annual competition in October. The Blazes will team up with Joshua High School and will perform a production number. Winner of the competition will perform at a Cowboys’ pregame at Texas Stadium. Drill teams that do not win will still be invited to be a part of the Cowboys Cheerleaders Christmas halftime show.

After the Blue Blazes Show Off for parents Thursday afternoon, I talked with officers Captain Sarah Nelson, Co-Captain Macy Smith, and Lieutenants Amanda Ruiz, Jessica Horton, Brittany Bell and Kaitlyn Potts. All agreed with the Blue Blazes motto this year of raising the bar and doing more challenging dance routines. Most admit there are challenges but nothing that can’t be overcome. All commented on the challenging ropes course they took on during their recent retreat.

A 28-foot tall Christmas tree donated for use in downtown Sulphur Springs is expected to arrive any day now. Gary and Dr. Debra Stokes and Dr. Don and Mary Ann O’Neal provided funds for the tree. City Manager Marc Maxwell says the tree comes with 10,000 LED lights on it. Maxwell says when the tree arrives, city employees will put it together for practice so they’ll be ready in December. Maxwell also says people are currently being recruited to build floats for the nighttime Lions’ Club Christmas Parade. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three floats in commercial and non-profit categories and for the top three bands.

The Sulphur Springs High School Athletic Booster Club will have their first meeting of the school year Monday night at 6:30 p.m. at NETDATA on Enterprise Lane. Wildcats Football Coach Greg Owens will preview the Paris game. Booster Club member Tory Humphries says functions of the Booster Club include not only supporting the athletes but also providing funding for the annual Sports Banquet and providing extras that athletic teams might not otherwise be able to afford. There are various membership levels starting at $25. Humphries says a new physician, Dr. Joseph Rogers, had the high bid to win the last season ticket available this year. Dr. Rogers also got a parking pass and a Wildcats stadium seat.

Nashville songwriter and singer Steve Oliver and country recording artist Vern Gosdin will be playing at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center on October 11. Oliver dropped by KSST Wednesday morning and was a guest on the Good Morning Show with Enola Gay. Oliver, originally from Moulton, Alabama, discussed songwriting and artists he has collaborated with. He also played some of his songs. His latest CD is called Stone to the Bone Country.

boys-and-girls-club
The Boys and Girls Club in Sulphur Springs is encouraging parents to sign up their children and provide contact information on Friday so that the club can provide a membership cards for children that will allow them to board the club’s bus. The club is also having an open house on August 29. Club Interim Director Ayana Pryor says the club provides recreation programs and also hosts the Sulphur Springs ISD SSPARKS after school program for students in Kindergarten to Third Grade. Ms. Pryor discussed the club on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Tuesday morning.
