Indian Summer Days on Saturday is another day of activities in Heritage Park. Some of the attractions include music of all kinds, Native American dancers, primitive arts and crafts and the John Chester Dutch Oven Cookoff. There will also be demonstrations of butter churning, tin punch, woodcarving, painting, stained glass, candle making and blacksmithing. There will also be a petting zoo and digging for artifacts for children. Admission is $3.

Fiddle player Bad Bob Rowan of Houston visited KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Wednesday morning. Rowan, who runs a Starbucks and draws the comic strip Buffalo Gals, also plays regularly at Gabby’s Barbecue in Houston on Friday and Saturday nights with guitarist Randy Meadows. Rowan says he got interested in the violin from watching Liberace’s brother George play on The Liberace Show. He inherited his first violin from his grandfather. Rowan was in the area to appear on a local Internet TV show.

 Joe Green - Cowboy Poet [2:31m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

After providing entertainment for a trail ride over the weekend, singer and cowboy poet Joe Green dropped in Monday morning to visit Enola Gay on KSST’s Good Morning Show. Green sang a song and recited one of his poems. Green will also be performing Friday night with Enola Gay and guitarist Kurt Bittner at Jay’s Place inside Judy’s Kitchen in downtown Sulphur Springs.

Numerous groups brought a variety of messages on children’s safety to the 8th annual Kids Safe Saturday at the Sulphur Springs Middle School. Children got wash off tattoos or had their hair sprayed with wild colors. Parents got their children’s fingerprint cards. There were games to play and demonstrations. Again this year, Charles Vaughn with the Sulphur Springs Fire Department cooked hundreds of free hotdogs for those in attendance.

The fourth annual Dutch Oven Cooking Class is coming up April 12 at Heritage Park. The following month there will be BlueGrass in the Park on May 9 and the annual Folk Festival in Heritage Park on May 10. Rick Wilson with the Hopkins County Historical Society discussed these events on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay on Friday morning.

 Plaque for Joe Mack Gober [3:15m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Even Joe Mack Gober’s mother was in on the plan. As she requested that Joe Mack take her to the bank, his sister prepared the Gober-Merrill dealership for a surprise party. When Gober returned, he was surprised with a plaque recognizing him for his 25-years as a Chevy dealer. A GM rep from Houston made the presentation to Gober who praised his staff for all their hard work.

 Quilt Guild [2:59m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Next Monday, the Lone Star Heritage Quilt Guild celebrates its 10th anniversary. Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap issued a proclamation noting the special date Tuesday morning. Several guild members were on hand showing off several award winning quilts including one queen-sized work of art that will be raffled off during Fall Festival. Judy Van Winkle is the current president of the quilt guild. She says the current guild membership stands at around 80. Seven are charter members. Ms. Van Winkle says there is always room for more quilters. She says if you are interested in joining them, they meet every fourth Monday at 6 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center.

Sulphur Springs Middle School 7th grader Ashley Clegg will represent Hopkins County in a large spelling bee coming up in Dallas March 15. Ashley won the Hopkins County Spelling Bee last Thursday. She says she has been hard at it studying a list of words that she might have to spell during the upcoming bee. Ashley says her parents have helped her study. Ashley’s school sponsor Linda Christian notes that Ashley also won the 7th grade UIL Spelling competition recently in Texarkana. Ms. Christian calls Ashley phenomenal.

When KSST’s Bill Bradford saw Sam Houston listed on the Democratic ballot for State Supreme Court, he wondered if the candidate was qualified or just depending on name recognition. In an interview, Bradford learned that Houston was part of a successful Houston law practice. Houston says he wants to change the current all GOP-Texas Supreme Court that he says sides with industry 87% of the time. Houston has to outpoll a Democratic opponent in March to face a GOP incumbent in November.

 Relay for Life Event [2:52m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

There will be a bake sale Wednesday and Thursday in the lobby of Guaranty Bond Bank to benefit Relay For Life and their fight against cancer. Bank employee Brittany Stegall says bank employees will be doing the baking. The baked goods will be available for purchase each day from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Ms. Stegall says the cancer battle is personal for her since her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. She says the bank also has a cancer survivor, Yvonna Womack.
