wada-agreement
Sulphur Springs ISD Director of Finance Mikki Eddins says although Robin Hood days are gone for public schools; there is still a way for wealthy and poor districts to partner for mutual benefit. The Region 8 Education Service Center has set up such an agreement between Sulphur Springs and two school districts in Region 18. Sulphur Springs sells them their Weighted Average Daily Attendance and receives funds in return in excess of state aid. The net gain for Sulphur Springs will be more than $258,000 plus interest they will get for holding all the money for a while. Sulphur Springs will also benefit in reimbursements from Region 8 because of the money they make in the deal.

New SSISD Bus Hub Seems to be Working Well

The Sulphur Springs ISD’s new Bus Hub at Prim Stadium worked extremely well on the first day of school according to Superintendent Patsy Bolton. She says it has more room than they had at the Middle School and it’s safer. One boy missed the bus but he got a ride home in a bus, all by himself. Another change this year is that buses that pick up children don’t have to go to each campus. The buses meet at Prim after pickups. Then the children get off and board a bus going to their school. The new bus hub has also improved traffic at the Middle School.

The Sulphur Springs School Board will have a public hearing on the district’s proposed tax rate and then is expected to adopt the budget for the next fiscal year when they meet Monday night at 6 p.m. On August 11, trustees considered a budget that featured more revenue than expenses. It contains $800 step increases for all teachers and more for those in the top two pay grades. Paraprofessionals receive a comparable raise, substitute teachers get an additional $5 dollars a day and hourly employees receive a 20-cent per hour raise. New County Budget to Feature Higher Tax Rate

hopkins-county-budget
The budget expected to be adopted by the Hopkins County Commissioners Court in early September
includes a tax increase. The tax rate will go up about a penny and three-quarters to 56-cents. County Judge Cletis Millsap says the tax rate is well below the rollback rate. The budget calls for a 5% salary increase for county employees, including law enforcement officers. Judge Millsap says the budget was negatively impacted by high gas and diesel prices, an overcrowded jail that requires expensive solutions and costs of right-of-way for the Highway 11 extension project that went from an expected $850,000 to more than $2.1-million. There will be two public hearings on the budget in September. It goes into effect October 1.
