Indian Summer Days Coming to Heritage Park Saturday

Indian Summer Days on Saturday is another day of activities in Heritage Park. Some of the attractions include music of all kinds, Native American dancers, primitive arts and crafts and the John Chester Dutch Oven Cookoff. There will also be demonstrations of butter churning, tin punch, woodcarving, painting, stained glass, candle making and blacksmithing. There will also be a petting zoo and digging for artifacts for children. Admission is $3.

Dutch Oven Cookoff to be a Part of Indian Summer Days Again This Year on Oct. 4

Rick Wilson, President of the Hopkins County Historical Society is encouraging everyone to sign up for the annual John Chester Dutch Oven Cookoff. The cookoff will take place on Saturday, October 4 at Heritage Park in conjunction with Indian Summer Days. Entry fee is $25 with proceeds going for park improvements. Wilson says $1,000 in prize money will be awarded this year. Wilson hopes for 25 to 30 cooks this year but would love to see 50 take part. New at the park for Indian Summer Days is a train on wheels that will serve as a people mover. Wilson was a guest on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Friday morning.

Sulphur Springs Fire Department Brings the Circus to Town Friday and Saturday

The circus is coming to town and it benefits the Sulphur Springs Fire Department. The Culpepper-Merriweather Circus will perform Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Buford Park. Tickets are cheaper in advance and are available at City National Bank, Guaranty Bond Bank, Pilgrim Bank, City Hall and both city fire stations. Skeeter the Clown and fireman Charley Vaughn were recent guests on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay.

New 4H Horse Club, HEAT to Have Special Program Sunday

The Hopkins Equestrian Action Team, or HEAT, the 4H Horse Club is sponsoring a special program Sunday in the Equine Pavilion. Rod Miller with the International Performance Horse Development Association will make a presentation from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. HEAT President Brooke Bailey and supporters Martha Hayward and Julie Bailey were guests on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Wednesday Morning.

Grand Opening of Main Street Project to Take Place October 6

The city of Sulphur Springs and the Downtown Business Alliance have big plans for the reopening of the 200 block of Main Street. DBA President Rita Edwards says a grand opening event is planned for Monday, October 6 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Chamber of Commerce President Meredith Caddell is expected to cut a ribbon at 5:30 p.m. After the ribbon cutting, there will be a procession of antique vintage and classic cars down Main Street led by Ms. Edwards followed by city and county officials. Barbeque will also be served at the event.

African American Leadership Group to Honor Lamar Elementary School Wednesday

The Hopkins County African American Leadership Conference is honoring Lamar Elementary School Wednesday for its continued academic success, according to the Reverend LaVelle Hendricks. Everyone is invited to attend a celebration with cake and punch from noon until 1:30 p.m. City and county proclamations will be read. Among their accomplishments, Lamar has been rated exemplary for the last 11 years. The Texas Education Agency has named them a distinguished school since 1997. They have also won Gold Performance Awards and have been named one of the best schools in Texas three times by Texas Monthly Magazine. Lamar has also made numerous donations to charities.

Final Day of Fall Festival Includes Stew Contest, Duck Race, Naming of New Cover Girl and a Variety of Other Events

135 cooks participated and thousands turned out for the World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest. Angi Gilmore sponsored by Tin Starr took first in Super Stew. Rachel Clark sponsored by Medicine Chest South won Chicken Stew and Steve Littlefield sponsored by REMAX took top prize for Beef Stew.
After the Stew Contest, some 1200 rubber ducks competed in the AFLAC Great American Duck Race. The first place duck was worth $500 for Yvonna Womack. Young Bailey Allan had the second place duck and received $250. Terry Haynie took third and received $100. The last place duck was worth $50 for Dillon Cunningham.
A new Cover Girl was announced Saturday evening. She’s Kayla Phillips from Sulphur Springs High School. Kayla plays basketball and runs track and is in FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Spanish Club. First runner up was Chelsey Coke of Como-Pickton and second runner up was Ashley Millard from Miller Grove.
The final day of Fall Festival included a petting zoo, household arts, quilts, arts and crafts, exhibits, food booths and a tractor pull. The evening ended with the Starnight Concert featuring country artist Keith Anderson.

Cover Girl Hopefuls Have Second Night of Competition with Calf Bottle Feeding, Cow Milking, Saddling and Mounting a Horse and Cutting Up a Chicken

The twelve Cover Girl Contestants competed in four more events Thursday night at the Civic Center Arena. They bottle-fed a calf, milked a cow, saddled and mounted a horse and cut up a chicken. This year’s Cover Girl contestants are Brittni Bailey, Danielle Johnson, Morgan Lampp, Kayla Phillips, Ashley Sells and Jami Scroggins from Sulphur Springs, Rachel Brantley from North Hopkins, Brittney Harris from Sulphur Bluff, Chelsey Coke from Como-Pickton and Kelli Claxton, Ashley Millard and Shaye-Lynn Emerick from Miller Grove. Saturday at intermission of the Starnight Concert, reigning Cover Girl Somer Gregory will relinquish her crown to one of the twelve.

County and City Proclaim Third Saturday in September to be World Champion Hopkins County Stew Cookoff Day

Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap and Sulphur Springs Mayor Oscar Aguilar both read proclamations Thursday morning making the third Saturday in September World Champion Hopkins County Stew Cookoff Day. The proclamations were issued right outside the County Courthouse. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Meredith Caddell was presented with a large framed copy of the proclamations.

135 Now Signed Up for Stew Cookoff, Duck Sales Continuing

Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce President Meredith Caddell reports that 135 cooks have now signed up for Saturday’s World Champion Stew Cookoff. She says late signups will not be included on a map of stew sites but those interested can continue to sign up until right before the event. Ms. Caddell says good weather has also been ordered. After the stew cookoff, the All-American Duck Race will take place. New rubber duckies have been purchased to replace the old plastic ones. Ducks are available for purchase all over town and can be bought on the stew grounds Saturday. The winning duck is worth $500, second place $200 and third $100. The very last duck, the lame duck, is worth $50.
