Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez Very Happy With Pleasant Grove Tournament Win

Wildcats Tennis Coach Tony Martinez’ current tennis team continues to show positive signs for the future. The Wildcats took first place at a Pleasant Grove tournament last Thursday (March 7). Coach Martinez said he was very happy with the results. He said the first place finish means a lot to the team and to his program. It was a first place tournament win Coach Martinez has been looking for since he arrived here. At Pleasant Grove, the Wildcats got first in boys singles from Jonah Kirkpatrick, first in boys doubles from Aaron Lucas and Logan Schumacher second in boys doubles from Jordan Gonzales and Michael McCord, third in girls singles from Zoe Wilson, third in girls doubles from Paige Miesse and Savannah Lilley and third in mixed doubles from Carlos Lopez and Jeauxleigh Cantu. Coach Martinez was especially pleased with the first place win by top boys singles player Jonah Kirkpatrick. Coach Martinez said it was Kirkpatrick’s first win after numerous close calls this season. Coach Martinez said a big semi-final win over Pleasant Grove’s #1 player ended with a 14-12 tiebreaker. He said Kirkpatrick made a lot of mistakes in the match but did not break down on the court. Coach Martinez said that showed mental toughness. He said he likes to teach more than just tennis such as how to handle yourself on the court. The Wildcats now play Thursday and Friday at their own Wildcat Tennis Complex in a tournament sponsored by Commerce.
