Saltillo, North Hopkins Winning in Tourney Play

The Saltillo Lions’ basketball team won two close games in a Boles tournament on Thursday (December 27). The Lions topped Big Sandy, 49-46 and then bested Detroit, 68-65. After trailing Big Sandy during most of the first three quarters, the Lions outscored Big Sandy 17-10 in the fourth quarter to get the narrow win. Chris Boekhorst had 19 points. Matthew Gurley had 13 points. Ben Moore had 11 points. Levi Hoover added 4 points and Dillon Beadle chipped in 2 points. Against Detroit, the Lions used a big third quarter to get the win. The Lions trailed by 7 after one quarter and by 4 at the half. They outscored Detroit 23-11 in the third quarter to take a 52-44 lead. The Lions held on to win in the tight fourth quarter. Boekhorst had 28 points. Moore had 16, Gurley scored 11, Andrew Redburn added 7 points. Beadle had 4 points and Hoover added 2 points. The Lions are now 13-6 for the season. They play Quitman at 3:45 p.m. Friday in the Boles tournament.

The Saltillo Lady Lions won their first game in a Boles tournament defeating Commerce, 39-27 Thursday. The Lady Lions built up a good lead through three quarters to secure the win. Chandler Bain had 11 points, Jocelyn Ochoa had 10 points. Anna Reeder had 7 points. Lorena Castro scored 5 points. Maddy Smith had 4 points. Paisley Kastner scored 2 points. The Lady Lions are now 13-8 for the season. Friday they play Big Sandy and Campbell in the Boles tourney.

Playing in a Graford tournament Thursday, North Hopkins topped Huckabay, 58-49. The Panthers play Olney Friday at 4:30 p.m.
