Hammack on Texas High Loss Saturday
Wildcats Baseball Coach Jerrod Hammack said Saturday Greenville gave the Wildcats a gift last Tuesday as the defeated Hallsville, 5-1 at home. The Bobcats loss put Hallsville into a first place tie with the Wildcats with 7-1 district records. Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats gave the gift back. The Wildcats lost in lackluster fashion to Texas High, 10-3 in Texarkana. Hallsville had an open date Friday. The Wildcats are now 7-2 in district play, a half game behind Hallsville. After the loss, Coach Hammack said he told his team that it looked to him like the Tigers came into the game fighting for their playoff lives and they played like it. He added the Wildcats came in comfortable like they already had a playoff spot and they just strolled into the game. Coach Hammack said the Wildcats did not do much in any phase of the game compared to the Tigers. He did like the fight the Wildcats showed in the top of the seventh inning as they scored a couple of runs. Coach Hammack said the Wildcats needed that mindset from the beginning. He said games like this happen, even to the best of teams. Coach Hammack said this one just came at a bad time. It said it was just one of those days and it was not the Wildcats day. Coach Hammack said the team would now have to wait almost an entire week before playing another game. The Wildcats have an open date Tuesday and then host Mount Pleasant Friday at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Park. It will be the first of three straight home games to wrap up district play. Included will be the Senior Night rematch against Hallsville.
Softball Assistant Coach Dorner on Saturday Morning Coaches Show
Lady Cats Softball Assistant Coach Bailey Dorner was a guest Saturday and KSST Radio and Cable Channel 18’s Saturday Morning Coaches Show. Coach Dorner is in her first year of coaching after playing college softball at the University of Mary Hardin-Bayor in Belton and high school ball at Mount Vernon. Coach Dorner’s mother is the softball coach at Mount Vernon. Coach Dorner, who played catcher, is tasked with coaching catchers and infielders for the Lady Cats and also coaching at first base. She is also a geometry teacher in the classroom. Coach Dorner noted that the Lady Cats have played well this season going 9-1 so far in district play. She called the home loss to Hallsville a wake up call. Coach Dorner noted that the Lady Cats then bounced back with wins over Pine Tree and Marshall. She said she doesn’t think the team has played to their full potential so far. Coach Dorner predicted the Lady Cats would get hot down the stretch. The Lady Cats game at Texas High was rained out Friday. The Lady Cats will make that game up Monday at 5 p.m. in Texarkana in a varsity only game. Coach Dorner said the Lady Tigers have a great pitcher. She said the Lady Cats will need to play good defense and put the ball in play on offense. Coach Dorner said the Lady Cats must be patient and look for their pitch against the Texas High pitcher. She said Head Coach David Carrillo is a good mentor for her. Coach Dorner appreciates that Coach Carrillo is a man of faith and an encourager. She said the Lady Cats were so competitive they were fun to watch, even in practice.
