Soccer Coaches Talk Marshall Games

Coach Wiggins on Wildcats Shootout Loss

Wildcats Soccer Coach Nicky Wiggins said the Wildcats 6-5 shootout loss to Marshall Tuesday night was a tough one. He said it was a hard fought game. The teams were tied in regulation, 2-2 and after overtime, 3-3. Coach Wiggins said his team played a lot better than they did against Pine Tree on Friday. He said they created a lot of scoring opportunities. Two frustrating ones early resulted in a hit post and a good keeper save. Chris Espinoza scored two goals for the Wildcats including one in overtime shortly after Marshall had taken a 3-2 lead. Gerardo Arellano also scored a goal for the Wildcats. Coach Wiggins said he hopes participating in a shootout will help the Wildcats later on. Close district games so far have already resulted in several overtimes and shootouts. The Wildcats travel to Texas High Friday night. Coach Wiggins said the Wildcats need a win.

Coach DeLeon on Lady Cats Soccer Win

Sophie Young scored four goals for the Lady Cats’ soccer team in a 6-0 victory at Marshall Tuesday night. Gracie Boyer and Makenna Kagar also found the net for the Lady Cats. Lady Cats Coach Jesus DeLeon had been encouraging his team not to let down against the Lady Mavs. The Marshall game is in between expected tough contests with Pine Tree and Texas High. Perhaps it took one half for the message to hit home. The Lady Cats led only 1-0 at halftime. Sophie Young and the Lady Cats midfielders began to click in the second half according to Coach DeLeon. The Lady Cats are now 2-0 in district play and are 7-3-2 for the season. The Lady Cats will play host to Texas High Friday night at the SSHS Track and Soccer Complex. Coach DeLeon said the Lady Tigers are always strong because they have good numbers to choose from. One of their players scored four goals in a recent game.
