Mt Pleasant 19 Wildcats 16; Field Goal in Last Seconds

Mt. Pleasant back up place kicker Sammy Puente kicked a 29 yard field goal with just 3-seconds left in the game as the Tigers defeated the Wildcats, 19-16 at Gerald Prim Stadium Friday night. The kick culminated a beat the clock drive down the field by the Tigers in the games last minutes. The drive came after the Wildcats had tied the score at 16-16 on an Angel Tavera field goal at the 3:59 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats scored on their first drive of the game as quarterback Ryan Humphries ran 23 yards for a touchdown to wrap up an 80 yard drive. Mt. Pleasant tied the game with a touchdown just before the end of the first quarter. The Tigers scored the only touchdown of the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead. The Wildcats attempt to tie the score before halftime was unsuccessful as they turned the ball over on downs near the Tigers 20 yard line. The Wildcats almost tied the game early in the fourth quarter. They scored on a short run by Lawrence Worth to make it 14-13 with the extra point kick pending. That kick was blocked and the Tigers returned it all the way down the field to earn two points to take a 16-13 lead at the 10:50 mark.

The Wildcats slip to 1-3 in district play and 2-6 for the season. They face must win games at Greenville and at home against Hallsville. Mt. Pleasant is now 2-3 in district play and 2-7 for the season. The Tigers face another must win game against Greenville at home on November 4.
