City Zoning Issues This Week as Boards and Commission Meet

city hallThree meetings in the Sulphur Springs City Council Chambers in City Hall, 201 North Davis Street, are scheduled for the first two days of the week. Monday night, the Planning and Zoning Commission meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday night, August 18 the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals and the Downtown Revitalization Board meet. The meetings are usually little attended and little attention is focused on the mundane items discussed. However, this week that could change for the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals.

Monday evening, August 17, at 6 p.m. the Planning and Zoning Commission, is scheduled to discuss and take action on a request to rezone property located at 100 thru 120 Airport Road and the adjacent lot to the south from Single Family to Light Commercial; a request to plat property located at 100 Airport Road; to rezone property located at 810 Gilmer Street from Heavy Commercial to Light Commercial. They, too, will elect a chair and vice-chair during their meeting.

At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday August 18, the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals will discuss and take action on an appeal filed by Sherry Cotton regarding the “Potato Man” sign at 204 Connally Street. Public reaction to this appeal has attracted attention of some outside the community. The board will also discuss a variance to the height requirement for a pole sign at 131 E. Industrial. Selection of a chairperson and vice-chairperson is also on the agenda.

Following at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the Downtown Revitalization Board will meet to discuss and take action on the façade design for 221 Main Street, the façade sign for 204 Connally, and the façade sign design for 108 Gilmer Street.
