Sulphur Springs Police officers continue their investigation of the early Monday morning shooting death of Jonathan Trahern Young, 26, of Sulphur Springs. SSPD CID Sgt. David Gilmore said they continue to seek the suspect, Tilton Mapps of Greenville.
The search for Mapps has proven him elusive since the search for him began shortly after the incident. Law enforcement thinks he has connections not only in Greenville but in other areas of Hunt County as well as Dallas County. Texas Ranger John Vance, the U. S. Marshall’s office, and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety are assisting in the search for Mapps. Gilmore called these organizations very helpful noting they do this type of work every day.
“We really need to get this subject in custody,” Gilmore said. Gilmore said that everyone at the crime scene have given statements concerning the event. However, the family members and associates of Mapps are not law abiding citizens and are assisting Mapps in eluding law officers, according to Gilmore. Gilmore said, “We’ll get him.”
The public is asked to assist in locating Mapps, who is considered armed and dangerous. Gilmore says Mapps is a black male, 5′ 10″ tall, 135 pounds, black hair and some facial hair like a mustache and goatee. Gilmore said few people in Sulphur Springs know Mapps, which also limits his apprehension.
