Calling All Cooks! by Johanna Hicks

Calling All Cooks!

Each year, Hopkins County pays tribute to the dairy industry through the Hopkins County Dairy Festival.  The board has been busily preparing for the 2015 event, and it is shaping up to be a great festival!

The Dairy Recipe Contest, held during the Hopkins County Dairy Festival, is a great way to showcase those dairy-rich recipes.  From chocolate cheesecake to cheesy corn bake, we’ve had some absolutely delicious recipes, and we want YOU to be part of the event!  Here are the details:

  • What: 2015 Dairy Recipe Contest
  • When:  Saturday, June 20, 2015
  • Time: 1:00 p.m. register food items

1:30 p.m. judging begins

  • Where: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston Street, Sulphur Springs
  • Written copy of recipe due by 5:00 p.m., Monday, June 15

There are a few guidelines to follow, so please pay close attention:

1)      Entrants must be Hopkins County residents.

2)      All entries must include at least two real dairy products.

3)      Written recipe should spell out measurements. Example: teaspoon, not ‘tsp’

4)      Written copy of the recipe and registration form must be submitted by June 15, no later than 5:00 p.m.

5)      Divisions: Beginning cooks (ages 11 and under); Youthful cooks (ages 12-18); Experienced Cooks (ages 19-59); Seasoned Cooks (ages 60 & over); Past and Present Dairy Festival Board members (judged separately)

6)      Entry categories: cheesecakes/desserts; side dish; main dish; appetizers

7)      Submit written entry to: 1200-B W. Houston, Sulphur Springs, Attn: Johanna Hicks

8)      Entries will be judged on flavor, appearance, texture, use of dairy products, and correct recipe format. Entries will be tasted by judges, so please keep the dish at a safe temperature en route to the Extension Office.  Refrigeration and warming will be available at the Extension Office.

Entry forms are available at the Extension Office, on the Hopkins County Dairy Festival website, and can be e-mailed to you.  Please contact our office if you have questions – 903-885-3443.  Let’s make this a great year for entries!

Twogether in Texas Marriage Education Workshop

Participation in the workshop has drastically risen since the beginning of the year!  The January workshop had nine couples participating, and the May workshop currently has six couples signed up, but we have room for more.  This workshop is recognized by the state of Texas for its effectiveness, and I encourage you to pass this information on to couples who are engaged to be married.  Of course, married couples are also welcome to attend as a refresher!  Here are the details:

  • What: Twogether in Texas marriage education workshop
  • When: Saturday, May 9
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m.
  • Where: Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office, 1200-B W. Houston Street, Sulphur Springs
  • Topics covered: Marriage Expectations, Communication, Conflict Resolution, Money Management, and Goals & Dreams
  • Cost: Free!!  In addition to being free of charge, lunch will be provided by the Sulphur Springs Country Club, and Idzy Bitsy Baker will be providing desserts.
  • Call:  please call 903-885-3443 to sign up so we can adequately prepare.

Here’s another nice perk – in addition to great information, free lunch, refreshments, and workshop, engaged couples will receive a certificate at the conclusion of the workshop to receive a $60 savings upon applying for a marriage license.  Simply take the certificate to the County Clerk’s office, and $60 of the fee will be waived (a Texas marriage license is now $82, so this is a substantial savings!)  The certificate is good for an entire year from the date it is issued.

Other workshop date may be available for 2015, so be sure to contact our office if May 9th won’t work.  Our goal is to strengthen marriages, because strong marriages make strong families, and strong families make strong communities.
