Security on Celebration Plaza

In response to the vandalism of the eternal flame and the memorial kiosk, the Sulphur Springs Police Department has made changes to the square’s security and will make other changes in the future.

“We have upgraded our patrol more heavily, especially around later hours of the day,” Chief of Police James Sanders said. “We’re trying to keep kids out of there lately especially with the holidays coming up. We actually caught some people trying to steal on the square earlier this week, so the extra patrol has been helpful.”

Police are still uncertain on whether the vandalism committed to the Memorial was criminal mischief or if they were trying to steal the copper. The Eternal Flame itself was in the blind spot of the Plaza’s security cameras. The Plaza’s cameras will be adjusted to cover these blind spots and additional cameras may be added.

The $7,000 reward set by the city is still active for any who might information regarding those who committed the vandalism.
