“Updated with Video” North Hopkins Breaks Ground for New School

North Hopkins Independent School District broke ground for a new Elementary School this Monday morning at 9:30. In a bond election May 10 of this year, district voters supported a $5 million bond issue for the new school to be built.

“This is a great big day for us,” superintendent Donna George said. “It took us about a year to plan all of this. We’re very excited to get in there.”

As a result of consistent growth, North Hopkins’ school has reached close to their capacity of students, none more so than the Elementary School. The new school will be considerably larger than the current Elementary School and the original school will still be used for extra classrooms should North Hopkins continue to grow.

“Most of our classes are almost to the max,” superintendent George said. “We have a couple of classes with over 45 students that we’ve split between two teachers. Everybody still has a classroom, but we have no extra class space left.”

The new facility will include 16 classrooms and offices with a new playground in the back, better parking and bus arrangements, as well as better accessibility for parents. Construction is scheduled to be finished by the 2015-16 school year.

While the almost 500 students of North Hopkins Schools looked on, Administrators and School Board members broke ground for a new elementary school next to current school buildings.  Although it was chilly outside, students may have been glad to be outdoors since their building had just lost power.  Superintendent Donna George presided for the groundbreaking.

After dirt was turned, I talked with Superintendent George.  Meanwhile students returned to classrooms hoping power would soon be restored.
