Luminant Power reported Thursday that five Luminant employees burned in an incident at the Thermo Mine in Hopkins County Wednesday afternoon are now listed in stable condition at Dallas Parkland Hospital. A total of six employees of Luminant sustained burns. According to a release from the Luminant Media Relations Office, the employees were in the vicinity of an out of service lignite storage silo when they unexpectedly came in contact with hot debris. The workers sustained burns mostly to their hands and legs. They were given immediate treatment at the scene and then were transported by Hopkins County EMS to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. One employee was treated and released and the remaining five were taken to Parkland in Dallas. Luminant has reported the incident to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which is responsible for monitoring mine safety and compliance with regulations, and they will investigate the incident. No active mining has occurred at Thermo Mine for months although plans call for resumption of mining this fall. Therefore some activity related to preparation of the site for the restart of active mining has been taking place. Meranda Cohn with Luminant Corporate Communications told KSST, Luminant would not be releasing the names of the burn victims unless they were given the okay to do so from the families.
