$294-thousand, Marijuana Found During Routine Traffic Stop

Cumby Reserve Police officer Paul Thompson stopped an eastbound vehicle on Interstate 30 for speeding Sunday. The odor of marijuana in the vehicle prompted a conversation. As he interviewed the two passengers from Missouri headed for Dallas, their stories didn’t match. Thompson called for Cumby police SGT. Paul Robertson to assist. The female passenger of the auto told Robertson that she and the male driver had marijuana in the car. As a result of her statement, a probable cause search revealed 4 oz. of marijuana, a state jail felony. Further search revealed $12,000 dollars found in a zip-up bag. State Trooper Ryan Haley and his canine partner were also invited to assist in the probable cause search. The canine alerted on a cooler in which was found a bag completely packed with cash–$282,184. The cash and marijuana were confiscated and the pair was arrested for the marijuana, unlawful use of an instrument—the cash—and possession of two firearms. The male was also arrested for tampering with evidence.
