Time Capsule Will Open Monday

For a while it appeared the unearthing of a 25-year old time capsule on Monday would have to be cancelled. The capsule, buried 25 years ago on the 75th anniversary of the Extension Service and scheduled to be opened this year on the 100th anniversary, proved hard to find. Finally Hopkins County Courthouse Custodian Jimmy Duncan found where the time capsule was located at noon Wednesday. County Judge Robert Newsom refers to Jimmy now as Never Give Up Duncan. The capsule opening will take place Monday at noon. It is located between the Magnolia tree and a monument near the County Courthouse. Neither Judge Newsom nor Extension Agent Johanna Hicks remembers the 1989 event. Newsom was busy as an Assistant DA and Ms. Hicks was on maternity leave. 1989 Extension Agent Gordon Ford hopes to attend Monday’s event along with some Extension Service executives. Judge Newsom was made aware of the time capsule recently by former precinct 1 County Commissioner Elton Stewart, whose wife came across an old newspaper clipping. Perhaps Monday will seem like Christmas morning. Judge Newsom says we don’t know what we’ll find. It should be fun.
