The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has a message for you. They are urging boaters to take extra care as thousands will be taking to the state’s lakes and bays over the busy 4th of July weekend. Maj. Alfonso Campos, chief of marine safety enforcement for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says he typically sees more accidents on the big three summer holidays: Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day weekends. He says there are more people on the water and there is usually a party atmosphere. As of July 3, there had been 95 boating accidents, 51 serious injuries and 23 fatalities on Texas waters so far this year. TPWD spokesman Aaron Reed encourages people to designate a driver for both the boat and the drive home. Second, he says wear a lifejacket. Game wardens will be out in force on state waters over the holiday weekend.
