First Flea Market on the Square is Happening May 17

The Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance will be having their first annual Flea Market on the Square on Saturday, May 17. Alliance President Rita Edwards says 41 booths have been reserved already. Ms. Edwards says each booth is 20X15 and costs $15. She says there will be vendor items such as jewelry, furniture, hot wheels and frames as well as garage sale items. Ms. Edwards says downtown merchants will also be displaying merchandize in front of their stores. Rita Edwards discussed the flea market on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Tuesday morning.

Wildcats’ Boo Evans Gets Scholarship

Wildcats multi-sports athlete DeQualin “Boo” Evans has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Evans received the first annual Dr. Marion H. Wheeler Senior Pulpit Lawyer Scholarship during Sunday morning worship service at East Caney Missionary Baptist Church. Evans received the scholarship from attorney Marion H. Wheeler Junior on behalf of his late father. Evans, a senior, was described as a scholar with a 3.5 grade point average. Evans, who played football, basketball and ran track for the Wildcats, has indicated he wants to continue to play football at Navarro College in Corsicana.

Seven People Are Rounded Up on Drug Charges By Special Crimes Unit

At least seven people were arrested as the result of a drug arrest roundup conducted by the Hopkins County Sulphur Springs Special Crimes Unit last Thursday. Special Crimes Unit Sgt. Harold McClure says the arrests were the result of numerous unrelated investigations begun from October to March, many of them undercover. McClure says the vast majority of the arrests were for delivery of drugs. McClure says the arrests occurred without incident. He says the roundup caught several people by surprise.

Sulphur Springs Man is Arrested For Stealing Copper Wire in the County

A 41-year old Sulphur Springs man was arrested for stealing copper wire in Hopkins County later Saturday night. A man who lives on the site of an old dairy farm discovered the suspect stealing copper from a building on his property located on State Highway 19 just off County Road 1182. Although the thief fled the scene, the property owner was able to get a license plate number. Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigator Jace Anglin arrested the suspect a short time later. Steven Eric Moore was taken to the Hopkins County Jail where he faces a charge of theft over $1,500.

Lady Cats Softball Coach David Carrillo admits he is running out of ideas for ways to keep his team relaxed for games this year. Monday morning Carrillo showed up at Sulphur Springs High School with his usually dark hair dyed blonde. If his Lady Cats get by Forney on Friday and Saturday in the second round of the playoffs, who knows what to expect next. Carrillo is not sure he can handle the bald look.

Several Wildcats Track Athletes Have Strong Regional Performances But No One Will Be Going To State

The Wildcats Track season ended Saturday when the team’s best hope for going to State, Tate Ramirez finished the 1600-meters in fourth place at the Regional Track Meet. Only the top two go to State. Other strong performances by the Wildcats included a 7th place finish in the shot put by Rodney Evans who threw his best distance of the year. Kaylon Page finished 8th in the high jump matching his best height of the year. Coach Jeff Riordan says it was a good season for track finishing second in district and taking 21 to Regionals including numerous underclassmen that’ll be back next year.

Sulphur Springs High School Athletic Banquet is May 5

Sulphur Springs High School will be having its Athletic Banquet Monday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the high school cafeteria. Athletic Director Greg Owens says the $8 tickets are available at the high school office and will be available at the door. Big Smith Barbeque will be served. Owens says each team will introduce their members and honor an MVP. The highlight of the evening is the presentation of the James Cameron Fighting Heart Awards and the Forrest Gregg MVPs.

Victim of Apparent Accidental Shooting is Identified

Authorities have released the name of a man apparently shot to death in a tragic accident. Deceased is 47-year old William Louis “Bill” Schoenky of Brashear. Although the cause of death is still listed as undetermined until further test results from the coroner’s office, it is believed the man was accidentally shot by a shotgun mounted in the back of his truck as he was working to change a tire. The mishap occurred early Friday morning at a roadside park along Highway 19 three miles south of I-30.

Two Teams and One Individual from Sulphur Springs High School are Heading to State Academic UIL Meet in Austin This Week

A contingent of eight students from Sulphur Springs High School will be competing at the State Academic UIL Meet taking place later this week in Austin on Friday and Saturday. The Spelling and Vocabulary Team of Lyndsi Bible, Zach Mahand, Sarah Fox and Emily Mason qualified by finishing first at Regional earlier this month. Zach Mahand also qualified in Ready Writing with his third place Regional finish. The Accounting Team of Ryan Clark, Crysel Garcia, John Latham and Ayanna Smith qualified as the top scoring second place team in the state.

Proposed Parking Lot is Topic For Hopkins County Commissioners Monday

The Hopkins County Commissioners Court will meet with an engineer Monday in a work session to discuss a proposed parking lot at the corner of Jefferson and Rosemont Streets right across from the Fidelity Express Building that the county plans to renovate into a county annex. County Judge Cletis Millsap says the parking lot is expected to cost $300,000. Judge Millsap says some of the funding for the parking lot is expected to come from funds generated by the Tax Increment Finance program. The judge says grant funds are also being sought.
