The Lady Cats Softball Team continues to tear the cover off the ball pounding out 15 hits in an 11-1 victory over Lindale Friday night on the road. Katie Dodd hit a home run. Kaci Kennedy and Marci Womack were both strong on the mound. The Lady Cats finish the first half of district play at 4-1. They host Paris Tuesday night, as four of their final five district games will be at home.

Lady Cats Golf Team Looking to Increase Lead in District Race on Familiar Course on Monday

The Lady Cats Golf Team takes a 44-stroke lead into round two of District Golf at the very familiar Sulphur Springs Country Club course Monday. The Lady Cats also have three golfers in the hunt for Medalist honors. In round one, Miranda Conway shot 100, Brittney Cheatham 101 and Kaitlyn Potts 102. Round three will be in Lindale April 7.

Young Wildcats Golf Team Hopes to Climb Up in District Standings on Their Home Course Monday

The young Wildcats Golf Team has their work cut out for them going into round two of the District Golf Tournament. The Wildcats are in sixth place after one player was disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard. Adam Perry did shoot 78 and Cort Walker an 86. At least round two is scheduled for the Wildcats’ home course at Sulphur Springs Country Club with round three in Lindale April 7.

The fourth annual Dutch Oven Cooking Class is coming up April 12 at Heritage Park. The following month there will be BlueGrass in the Park on May 9 and the annual Folk Festival in Heritage Park on May 10. Rick Wilson with the Hopkins County Historical Society discussed these events on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay on Friday morning.

Former Como-Pickton Superintendent Has Day in District Court

Bryan Neal, the former Superintendent of the Como-Pickton CISD, entered guilty pleas to one count of forgery and one count of making a false statement to obtain property in Hopkins County District Court Friday morning. In a plea agreement, Neal was sentenced to five years deferred probation and was ordered to pay $20,701 in restitution. District Attorney Martin Braddy said Neal will also be required to serve 60-days in the County Jail beginning June 11. Judge Robert Newsom dismissed 35 other counts against Neal as part of the plea agreement. Neal was arrested in January of last year after an investigation by the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department.

Hopkins Co. Commissioners Court is Considering Hiring a Lawyer to Fight Proposed Sludge Permit

At the request of the Hopkins County Commissioners Court, the Ark-Tex Council of Governments tabled and did not endorse a proposal to apply wastewater and water treatment sludge to nearly 400 acres of land in precinct 4. County Judge Cletis Millsap says the Commissioners Court is also considering hiring an attorney to prolong the sludge permit fight. About 200 citizens, many expressing opposition to the sludge permit recently attended a meeting at the Courthouse. State Representative Mark Homer has been asked to petition the TCEQ for a public hearing on sludge in Hopkins County.

District Judge Newsom and County Commissioners Court to Meet Monday on Future County Office Space Needs

District Judge Robert Newsom will meet with the Hopkins County Commissioners Court to discuss future county office space Monday afternoon. Last Monday Newsom sent each member of the court a letter repeating his plan for new construction of a Courthouse Annex to be located adjacent to the County Jail. County Judge Cletis Millsap says the court is committed to a plan to renovate the Fidelity Express building into a courthouse annex. Judge Millsap also says new construction will be too expensive for the county’s budget.

Safe Route to School Project is Coming to Saltillo

Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap hosted a meeting Friday morning for a Safe Route to School Project for the Saltillo School District. Ray Vann is a consultant working on the program. Vann says TXDOT has provided $10,000 so that the safety needs for routes to and from the Saltillo schools can be determined. Vann says the public will be invited to bring their comments to a future public meeting. Vann says program officials will develop a plan based on those public comments. He says officials can then so back to TXDOT for a much larger grant for actual improvements that enhance safety to and from school. The same program is also in place in Cumby schools.

Wildcats Varsity and JV Squads Capture First at Henderson Track Meet Thursday

The Wildcats Varsity and JV Track Teams both won their divisions at a Henderson Meet Thursday. Coach Jeff Riordan said it was a great tune up and would give athletes confidence for the district meet, which is next on April 7-9 in Mt. Pleasant. Riordan says many athletes continue to improve their performances despite how hard they are being worked. Riordan says the Wildcats will get some days off going into district so they will be fresh at the district meet. Riordan hopes the team will peak at the district meet. With the depth on this year’s team, Riordan feels the Wildcats have a good shot at a district title.

Even Joe Mack Gober’s mother was in on the plan. As she requested that Joe Mack take her to the bank, his sister prepared the Gober-Merrill dealership for a surprise party. When Gober returned, he was surprised with a plaque recognizing him for his 25-years as a Chevy dealer. A GM rep from Houston made the presentation to Gober who praised his staff for all their hard work.
