SSHS Academic UIL Team Finishes Second At District Meet

The Sulphur Springs High School Academic UIL Team finished second in district competition Saturday in Paris. Lindale outscored Sulphur Springs by 94 points to take the district championship Sweepstakes Trophy. Lindale also had more points in Speech and Journalism. Sulphur Springs did capture the Literary Trophy that goes to the top school in all events except One-Act Play, Speech and Journalism. The Lindale and North Lamar One-Act Plays were chosen to advance to Area competition with Sulphur Springs’ The Insanity of Mary Girard chosen as an alternate. Lead Actress Luz Hernandez, who played Mary Girard was named Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. The Furies made All-Star Cast. The Furies were played by Josh Bain, Kelsey Brown, Parey Draper, Brandon Fain, Sam Long, Tiffany Stenger, Brittney Woolley and Sarah Yosten. Sulphur Springs will be sending 21 students and 3 alternates to the Regional Meet in Denton on April 11-12.
Individually Sulphur Springs had six first place district champions as well as well as five teams. First place winners were Lyndsi Bible in Spelling and Vocabulary, Cole Cable in Social Studies, Chelsey Tiegiser in Computer Applications, James Wheeler Junior in Science and also was named tops in biology and chemistry, Ryan Clark in Accounting and Sam Pierce in Computer Science.
First Place Teams included the Social Studies Team of Cole Cable, Katy Mason, Garrett Gray and Ayana Smith, the Science Team of James Wheeler Junior, Chelsey Tiegiser, Jillian Campbell and Jacob Cooper the Accounting Team of Ryan Clark, Crysel Garcia, John Latham and Ayana Smith the Spelling and Vocabulary Team of Lyndsi Bible, Zach Mahand, Sarah Fox and Emily Mason and the Computer Science Team of Sam Pierce, Leah Davis, Connor McCorkle and Jon Henton.
