March 29, 2008 |
28-year old Joseph Ray Ries of Commerce is one step closer to execution after a Federal appeals court upheld his conviction for killing a Cumby man in 1999. A Hopkins County jury deliberated only 7 minutes before finding Ries guilty of capital murder. Ries was convicted for shooting a sleeping 64-year old Robert Ratliff of Cumby after breaking into the victim’s home. A Ries co-defendant Christopher Lee White is serving a sentence of life in prison.
