The Wildcats Soccer Team lost a tough one to Mt. Pleasant, 1-0 Friday night in Mt. Pleasant. The game featured tight checking defense that allowed for few offensive chances. Mt. Pleasant took advantage of one opportunity to score. It occurred with about 3:30 left to play in the first half. The Tigers’ Leonel Yanez broke in alone on keeper Mario Arellano with the ball loose in front of him. The two arrived at the ball at about the same time but Yanez got enough of the ball for it to dribble into the goal. The Wildcats are now 8-2 in district play and two games behind Mt. Pleasant. The Wildcats play Texas High at home on Thursday.

 Student Spelling Bee Winner: Play Now | Play in Popup

12-year old Ashley Clegg, a 7th grader at Sulphur Springs Middle School won the Hopkins County Spelling Bee Thursday afternoon. She correctly spelled “dyslexia” and “tamale” to win in 12 rounds. The Dallas Morning News sponsors the event. There were spellers from the Middle School as well as Douglas Intermediate School and Como-Pickton. Ashley will advance to the next level of competition in Dallas on March 15.

 Glen Melancon for Congress [4:52m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Glen Melancon is a Sherman history professor who is running for Congress. He faces VaLinda Hathcox of Sulphur Springs in the March Democratic Primary. The winner will face the GOP Primary winner in November. Recently Melancon spoke at a forum sponsored by the Political Enlightenment Group. Melancon says if elected he will put the interests of people ahead of the interests of corporate special interests. He wants to be the voice of families. Melancon also says he favors letting Iraqis gradually take care of their country. He says U.S. troops have bravely done all they can be expected to do.

 Entrepeneur Center [2:54m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

A regional executive of an innovative center unveiled Thursday afternoon in Sulphur Springs calls the center a foresighted investment. The Entrepreneur Assistance Center for the North Texas Regional Center for Innovation and Commercialization is located in the new Economic Development Corporation building at 1200 Enterprise Lane. Mike Lockread, an executive with the center, says it will provide a place where entrepreneurs can work and receive assistance. EDC Executive Director Roger Feagley says results may take some time. EDC Board Chairman Carl Bryant called the center exciting.

February weather featured a little more rainfall than the norm. We recorded 3.81 inches for the month with average being 3.2. After a dry January though, Sulphur Springs remains about 1 inch below normal for the first two months of the year. Otherwise February was very normal. The typical low is 36 degrees and it was. Typical high is 59 and we averaged 61 in February. The coldest day was 22 degrees on February 2. Hottest day was 80 degrees on February 26.

The Lady Cats Softball Team split two games at the Frisco Tournament Thursday. The Lady Cats got a one-hitter from pitcher Kaci Kennedy and the batters collected 12 hits as the Lady Cats defeated Denton 15-0. Then the Lady Cats lost to Burleson 10-5. Taylor Clifton took the loss for the Lady Cats who are now 8-5 on the season. They continue play in the Frisco Tournament through Saturday.

The Wildcats Varsity and JV both finished second and the Lady Cats third in a Liberty-Eylau Track Meet Thursday. Lady Cat Megan Massey took first in the mile and 2 mile runs. Third place finishers for the Lady Cats included Delandria Pryor in the shot put, Julie Hromcik in the mile and their 4X100, 4X200 and 4X400 Relay Teams.
For the Wildcats, Second place finishers were Rodney Evans in shot put, Ross Hicks in 3200 meters and Tyler Wilson 800 meters and 1 mile. 3rd place finishers were Colton Nash shot put, Andrew Burton discus, Shane McQueen hurdles, Garrett Gray 3200 meters, Ross Hicks 1 mile, and the Wildcats 4X100 and 4X200 Relay Teams.

 Rotary Spelling Winners [3:57m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

The Mean Green Spelling Machine almost meet their match, but in the end the team sponsored by Guaranty Bond Bank successfully defended their championship at the 3rd annual Rotary Club Spelling Bee. The word “embarrassment” tripped up the runner up Ms. Bee Haven team sponsored by Farmers Electric Cooperative. The champs’ Menzi Campbell correctly spelled “embarrassment” and then “aficionado” for the victory. Gail Herman and Patricia Chase were also on the Mean Green Spelling Machine team. Funds raised during the fun evening will go for Rotary student scholarships.

Karon Weatherman, Program and Marketing Director with the Sulphur Springs Senior Center, is receiving calls about an apparent scam targeting senior citizens. A woman is telling people she can put them on a free meal program. She wants to meet in their home to sign them up. The caller claims to work for NETO in Mineola. Ms. Weatherman says neither of the county’s meals programs use phone calls to sign people up. There is also no NETO office in Mineola. Ms. Weatherman advises people not to give out any personal information over the phone or agree to an appointment in the home.

Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell would like to see this year’s Lion’s Club Christmas Parade become an electric light parade at nighttime. He says discussion with the Lion’s Club is underway. Several cities across the nation do their parades like this and they report large crowds and lots of fun. Maxwell would also like to see cash prizes for things like a marching band competition and for best floats. Maxwell hopes to involve the Chamber of Commerce as well as the Downtown Business Alliance.
