Veterans Memorial [3:17m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

The Hopkins County Veterans Memorial Committee unanimously approved an architect’s plans of a memorial Thursday night. Architect Charles Jones designed the memorial to be located on the southeast portion of the Downtown Square. The drawing includes nine columns for veterans’ names on granite paving shaded by seven trees. Five benches are shown in front. Jones says the columns can handle 15,000 names and there is room to add more columns. The concept will now go before the city’s Downtown Revitalization Board.

The old Hi-Lo Grocery Building at the corner of Main and League Streets will be torn down, perhaps as soon as Saturday. Reggie Clemmons tells KSST that his son Jeff has acquired the property. He indicates plans for the site have not yet been determined. At some point, a city ordinance was passed preventing buildings from being located closer than 25 feet from a street. The old Hi-Lo Grocery building was in violation of this ordinance but it was grand fathered and allowed to operate until the owners closed it. The city has not allowed new owners to reopen it due to the ordinance.

Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell gives the Downtown Business Alliance quite a bit of credit for the emphasis on downtown revitalization planning that took place during the last half of the year. It was a major city story of 2007. Maxwell admits he had to push his downtown revitalization plans to another level when the business alliance started urging the city to support being a part of the state Main Street Project. Maxwell opposed that move feeling he could get more accomplished if he himself served as a Main Street Coordinator. Maxwell revealed his vision to the City Council with lots of business alliance members in the audience. Later, the Veterans Memorial became a piece of the proposed Downtown Square redo. Orlando, Florida traffic engineer Ian Lockwood visited and left behind design concepts for a block of Main Street and the Downtown Square. The City Council has also created a Tax Increment Refinancing Zone downtown to fund projects, mainly the proposed Downtown Square redo. Groundbreaking for the Main Street renovation is expected to take place early next year.

DOWNTOWN PLANS 2007 audio

The sulfur springs that gave the city its name were rediscovered by accident last June after most people thought they had disappeared forever. It was a big city story in 2007. City Manager Marc Maxwell says he remembers thinking we don’t have to depend on fake springs anymore, we found the real ones and rediscovered our identity. The discovery was the talk of the town. Maxwell says the city has future plans to utilize the springs for promotion and tourism in some way but he says right now he is focusing on the Main Street redesign first and then the Downtown Square project. A city crew uncovered the springs as they were digging behind City Hall to redirect the old Town Branch. The branch had been running under City Hall but it caused a back parking lot to collapse.
