Grass Fires: Play Now | Play in Popup

What started out as a quiet Sunday morning, turned into a busy day for Hopkins County volunteer fire departments. Six grass fires and a couple of EMS first responder calls all came in within an hour’s time. Delta County also requested help battling a good-sized grass fire. Hopkins County Fire Chief Carl Nix notes that conditions are getting very dry in the county. He encourages everyone to do their burning in a barrel with a cover and don’t leave it unattended. Nix also wants people to be cautious with fire works.

While reviewing major stories in county government during 2007, Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap makes it clear he feels renovating the Fidelity Express building downtown is the way to go to solve future county office space needs. Several weeks ago, District Judge Robert Newsom had suggested that the county build a new facility adjacent to the current County Jail. Judge Millsap says the cost of new construction will be too high.
During his review, the judge was pleased the Commissioners Court was able to keep the tax rate the same when this fiscal year’s budget was adopted. Judge Millsap says the county was helped by increased property values and also several grants. The judge notes that the Intermodal Facility that opened in 2007 utilized grant funds. Judge Millsap says FEMA grant funds were also secured after heavy rains did damage to county roads and infrastructure.

One person on the highway during the Christmas holidays reported that DPS troopers seemed to be everywhere. That is expected to be the case again on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The Texas Department of Public Safety indicates that all available troopers will be on patrol looking for drunk drivers, speeders and seat belt violators. DPS Director Col. Thomas A. Davis Junior says crash death notifications are never easy, but they are even more difficult during the holidays. He adds their hope is that their efforts will prevent some of those deaths. Highway Patrol troopers ask Texans to remember the following driving safety tips: slow down, don’t drink and drive, buckle up everyone in the vehicle, keep cell phone chatter to a minimum, drive with courtesy and slow down in bad weather and in construction areas.
