 Maxwell on Alcohol Change [3:00m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

At a meeting next Tuesday, the Sulphur Springs City Council will consider an ordinance that would amend zoning in the Central Commercial District so that businesses there, especially restaurants, can apply for specific use permits to serve alcohol. City Manager Marc Maxwell explains that The Winery in Winnsboro is very interested in opening a food and wine restaurant in downtown Sulphur Springs. The Planning and Zoning Commision recently approved the proposed ordinance unanimously.

 Special Crimes Unit Grant [2:03m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

The Hopkins County Sulphur Springs Special Crimes Unit that wages the war on drugs locally is living on borrowed time. The grant funding the three-man unit expired November 1. In the interim, the city and county have picked up the slack while a replacement grant is being sought. Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell says he expects to hear something on the new grant soon. Maxwell says the Special Crimes Unit is critically important.

 Intersection: Play Now | Play in Popup

It turns out that the city of Sulphur Springs will need TXDOT’s approval to properly do the Main Street project. City Manager Marc Maxwell says in order for Main Street to drain properly, the project will extend into the intersection of Main and Davis. Davis Street in part of State Highway 67 so TXDOT’s blessing is needed. On a related matter, Maxwell says a city request to replace two traffic lights with four-way stops on Davis Street downtown is still being considered by TXDOT.

 Armed Robbery Arrests [0:48m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Hopkins County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a couple at around midnight Thursday night shortly after a Hunt County gas station was robbed at knifepoint. The Campbell Gas Station at I-30 and Highway 50 reported they were robbed. Hunt County authorities broadcast that they were looking for a black male and black female in a red SUV. They also put out a partial license plate number for the vehicle. A few minutes later Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department Corporal Eddie Moon and deputy Aaron Hanna stopped the suspect vehicle along I-30. The suspects were arrested and were taken to the Hopkins County Jail where Hunt County authorities picked them up.

 Democratic Sign Up Party [1:37m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Monday is the first day to file for Hopkins County offices. Democratic Party Chairman Bill Brannon has announced that he will have a signing party Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Judy’s Kitchen on Main in Sulphur Springs for any democrat interested in running for office. All Hopkins County incumbents up for election this time have indicated they will run again. Republican candidates interested in running will need to file with GOP County Chairman Chris Brown. The final day to file is January 2.

 High School Musical [3:55m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Sulphur Springs High School will be presenting High School Musical at the Civic Center December 13-16. Director of Theatre Arts Dawn Magness says the high-energy show has been fun to direct. The show requires a cast of 65-70 not including crewmembers. Ms. Magness is encouraging everyone to get their $5 tickets early because she says she can’t guarantee tickets will be available at the door. Call the high school for tickets.

 Lights of Life [3:10m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

A special Christmas tree was lit up Thursday night in front of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital during the Lights of Life event. People purchased lights on the tree in memory of loved ones or to honor someone special. In a departure from the past few years, the weather was nice. Santa Claus was there and the Sulphur Springs High Jazz Band and Choir performed. Speakers included Hospital Foundation Director Jackie Thornton, Hospital Administrator Michael McAndrew and Lights of Life campaign chair Wanda Galyean.

 Smith on Texas Beef Council [0:41m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Sulphur Springs beef, dairy and hay producer Don Smith has been elected to represent cattle producers on the Texas Beef Council board of directors. Smith was elected by the Texas Farm Bureau. Smith will serve on the nutrition committee of the board. The nutrition committee approves and evaluates state check-off funded programs in the areas of consumer nutrition promotions, health professional outreach and education, and youth nutrition initiatives. The committee also reviews beef research projects. Smith has also served for several years on the Texas Farm Bureau Board of Directors.

 DPS Cocaine Bust [1:02m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

A Michigan couple was arrested Wednesday night after cocaine was found in their vehicle after a traffic stop. DPS Trooper Brandon Stribling stopped the vehicle along eastbound I-30 at around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night. The driver of the vehicle was said to be nervous and conflicting stories were given. After consent to search was granted, 9 wrapped bundles of cocaine were found in a rear passenger area of the vehicle. 33-year old Robert D. Sajewski of Southgate, Michigan and 20-year old Christine Nicole Sturgill of Allen Park, Michigan face charges of possession of a controlled substance over 400 grams.

 Lamar Award [2:56m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

Lamar Elementary School Principal Rowena Johnson comes up with several reasons why Lamar was listed as one of the best public schools in Texas in the December issue of Texas Monthly. Lamar testing data for math impressed the National Center for Educational Accountability who compiled the list for the magazine. Ms. Johnson cites her hard working staff who love children, tutoring before, during and after school, and looking for new material and ideas to make math interesting and exciting. For Lamar, it’s the third time they have made the list in four years.
