TXDOT Area Engineer Ernest L. Teague Jr. has plans for a radical reconstruction of State Highway 11 West between Sulphur Springs and Commerce that could impact 200 landowners and require taking a few homes along the new route’s right of way. The TXDOT proposal will be explained at a public meeting on August 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Teague says the dangerous road will be improved to 5-lanes with curb and gutter and shoulders. Two of the current road’s sharp curves will be straightened and several hills will be shaved down, some perhaps by as much as 10 to 12 feet. At the public meeting, Teague says there will be a break so that landowners can hear specifically how the new highway will impact their property.

Sulphur Springs School Superintendent Patsy Bolton says she will continue to try to find ways to improve salaries in the budget for the next school year. The school board received a first draft of a preliminary budget Monday night. It only contained an $800 salary scale step increase for some teachers and a 3% pay hike for other district employees. After personnel costs and increases in areas such as transportation and utilities, Ms. Bolton says very little money is left for other areas. Besides salary increases, the Superintendent would like to see improved benefits for employees including a program where the district would match a percentage of funds employees’ contribute to a retirement supplement plan.
