16th Independence Day Concert on Square is a Memorable One : KSSTRadio.com

With the weather cooperating perfectly, the 16th annual Independence Day Concert on the Square was quite a show. The evening opened with the entry march of Hopkins County veterans and presentation of the colors by the Hopkins County Military Coalition. Right at the end of the playing of the National Anthem, five planes conducted a fly over of the square. The Northeast Texas Symphony opened the show with Copland’s Hoedown, Gould’s American Salute, the National Emblem March by E.E. Bagley and a Pops Hoedown by Richard Hayman. The symphony then saluted various branches of the military playing songs for the Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, the Air Force and the Navy. Choral Society member Gary Spraggins served as song leader as the crowd was then urged to sing along to Amazing Grace. Sousa’s rousing Semper Fidelis following with the symphony put through their paces by guest conductor Jeff Spears. Beckel’s Liberty For All followed featuring Dot Pelton doing dramatic reading from Patrick Henry, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Spraggins then returned to lead the crowd through several sing along songs. Next as the symphony was ending Berlin’s God Bless America, fireworks began and continued through a couple of playings of Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever that concluded a wonderful patriotic evening.
