Old Magnolia Tree [3:17m]: Play Now | Play in Popup

The 80-plus year old Magnolia tree near the Hopkins County Courthouse may be in its final days. The tree has been a landmark since it was planted by the Tanti Ladies Club in 1928. County Judge Cletis Millsap says he understands such trees have a life expectancy of between 75 and 100 years. The judge says the county keeps the tree trimmed and watered but it appears to be in decline. Judge Millsap says the tree was stressed greatly during courthouse restoration several years ago. One tree doctor offered to help but his price tag was $10,000. Judge Millsap says the tree may need to be replaced. If you have some thoughts about what the Commissioners Court should do about the tree, contact them and let them know.
