Hospital Board Elects Officers, Ponders Hiring Specialists

Tim Kelty is the new President of the Board of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. Ralph Preuss is vice-President and Bill Zahn Secretary. The new officers were selected Tuesday evening. Newly elected board members Preuss and Joe Bob Burgin were also given the oath of office.
With the State Legislature not cooperating, the Hopkins County Memorial Hospital board is trying another approach to be able to hire physicians, especially specialists, to come to Sulphur Springs.

The Hopkins County Memorial Hospital Board has big plans if the price is right. The board has asked the administration to determine the cost of a three-story tower addition to the front of the hospital that will be filled with private rooms. Administrator Michael McAndrew says the project will also include renovation of the hospital’s current second and third floors. He says this will create a brand new hospital that will serve the public well for the next 20 to 30 years.

Two solos and two ensembles from the Sulphur Springs High School Band picked up difficult to achieve first division ratings at state competition at UT Austin this past weekend. Director of Bands Charles McCauley said the competition is the toughest in the country.

The Watoto Children’s Choir is returning to Sulphur Springs. The Kampala, Uganda choir will be doing a free concert on June 9 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Center Auditorium. The choir is made up of children orphaned by AIDS and war in Uganda. They’ve been coming to the area for quite a few years now. Bruce Taylor with New Covenant Church, formerly King’s Way Church discussed the concert as a guest on KSST’s Good Morning Show with Enola Gay Thursday morning.

Wildcats AD Owens is For Steroids Testing

The Texas State Legislature has approved testing athletes for steroids and Wildcats Head Coach and Athletic Director Greg Owens he’s all for it. He says anything that can be done to protect kids he’s for.

Sulphur Springs a Little Better Off For Water Than One-Year Ago

Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell recently read the Dallas Morning News with interest as they proclaimed the drought to be over. He says maybe for them but not for us. Cooper Lake, the city’s main source of drinking water, remains about 10 feet under capacity.

Old Magnolia Tree Near Courthouse Struggles to Survive

The 80-plus year old Magnolia tree near the Hopkins County Courthouse may be in its final days. The tree has been a landmark since it was planted by the Tanti Ladies Club in 1928.

Local Chevy Corvette owners David Brewer and Danny Durham are gearing up for the 3rd annual Corvette Show taking place during the Dairy Festival on June 9. The show will end just in time for the Ice Cream Freeze Off that afternoon. Last year’s show attracted 44 `vettes.
